What is Salik in Dubai, and How Does It Work?

Salik is Dubai's electronic toll collection system that was launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on July 01, 2007. The toll charges are collected automatically as a vehicle passes through the toll gate. The term Salik means 'open' or 'clear' in Arabic. As the vehicles are not required to stop to pay, the Salik system reduces congestion and ensures an orderly flow of traffic within and outside the city.
The RTA Dubai Salik system is based on RFID technology. The Salik tag is a sticker fitted with an electronic SIM. Vehicle owners should register their vehicles under Salik and fix a Salik tag on them. The vehicle is detected at the toll gate through the scanners, and the toll is directly deducted from the account.
